Northland's Truck Wiring & Integration System

When customers invest in truck equipment (whether it's a snowplow, strobe lighting package, inverter, work lights, or other accessories) they naturally focus on the finished product. What often goes unnoticed is the wiring behind the scenes that makes everything function reliably day after day.


At Northland Equipment, we believe quality installations start with quality wiring practices. That's why we've developed standardized wiring methods that make installations clear,

troubleshooting faster, and future additions easier.

Every vehicle that enters our shop is different. Some require a simple installation, while others involve multiple accessories, switch systems, and custom electrical integrations.


Regardless of the complexity, our goal remains the same: to create an organized electrical system that is easy to understand and service years down the road.


A wiring job may look great the day it leaves the shop, but what happens wen an accessory needs to be added later? What if a component fails after years of service? What if another technician needs to diagnose an issue?


Those are situations we plan for during every installation.


Understanding Our Loom Color System


Most standard wiring installations utilize black protective loom to shield wires from abrasion, moisture, and the harsh conditions trucks encounter every day.

However, when a vehicle contains multiple electrical circuits or custom accessories, organization becomes even more important.


To make future diagnostics and service easier, we often utilize a color-coded loom system:


Red Loom = Constant Hot Power


Red loom identifies circuits that have constant battery power available, even when the ignition is turned off.


These circuits may power accessories that need uninterrupted power or require direct battery connections.


Blue Loom = Keyed Power


Blue loom identifies circuits that only receive power when the vehicle's ignition is on.


These keyed-powered circuits help prevent accidental battery drain and are commonly used for accessories that should only operate while the vehicle is running.

Our color-coded loom system helps quickly identify constant hot (red) and keyed power (blue) circuits, making future diagnostics and service more efficient.

This simple visual distinction allows technicians to quickly identify circuit types without tracing every wire individually.


Whether the vehicle returns next month, or five years from now, the color-coded system helps streamline diagnostics, repairs, and future equipment installations.

Yellow Tags That Simplify Service

Organization doesn't stop with our wiring loom colors.


Northland's Quality Control department utilizes durable yellow weatherproof tags to identify critical connection points throughout the vehicle's electrical system. Tags serve as quick visual markers that help locate wiring connections without spending unnecessary time tracing circuits.


Like our color-coded loom system, it's a simple detail that saves valuable time during diagnostics and future service work.


Factory Integration Whenever Possible


Modern trucks offer increasingly sophisticated electrical systems, and whenever possible, we prefer to utilize factory switch systems and OEM integration points.


Using factory-installed switches provides a clean appearance, seamless operation, and often a more intuitive user experience for drivers. Rather than adding multiple aftermarket switches throughout the cab, factory integration can allow equipment to operate through controls already built into the vehicle.


Some examples include:

  • Three-way switch configurations that allow equipment to be controlled from multiple locations or through multiple operating modes.

  • Backup alarm interruption systems that temporarily disable backup alarms when operating during early morning or late-night hours in noise-sensitive areas.

  • Battery guard protection systems that automatically monitor battery voltage and shut down accessories before the vehicle battery is discharged to the point where the truck can no longer start.


Not every application allows for factory integration, however. When custom controls are required, our technicians can design and install custom switch solutions tailored to the customer's specific equipment package.


The result is a professional, organized setup that feels like it belongs in the truck from day one.

Depending on the application, Diamond Logic® programming can help automate functions, improve operator convenience, and create cleaner, more efficient installations.
